We received an invitation to attend a New Year's Eve Concert at Chiang Kai Shek Memorial Hall in Taipei, performed by the Taiwan National Symphony Orchestra and the Vienna State Opera Chorus. But ... Classical music? Moi? Hmmm ...
Now, I'm not a huge fan of classical music, despite having studied the piano for years, so I didn't quite embrace this experience as much as a more ... shall I say ... cultured person would have. However, I had not been to the Chiang Kai Shek Memorial Hall before, and this would be the perfect opportunity. So, off we went ...
The impressive pavilions ... enhanced by the beautiful lighting ...
What a gorgeous ceiling! And are those chandeliers with an oriental touch? Lovely!
Inside the concert hall ...
All in all, I had a lovely time. The concert was perfectly timed to end just before midnight, when everyone in the concert hall did a countdown to the New Year, and strings of confetti were shot out into the audience. Cultured fun :)
Then, to kick off 2011, the orchestra and choir performed an encore - a beautiful Taiwanese song sung half in Taiyu and half in Chinese, accompanied by a marvelous musical score beautifully played by the orchestra. Would it be terribly uncultured to say that I think I enjoyed that performance the most?
