Xiao Nan Guo, Xintiandi, Shanghai

For dinner one evening, we decided to venture to Xiao Nan Guo for some Shanghainese food.  We had some deep fried codfish paste ...

One of our favorite Shanghainese/Szechuan dishes - Ma Po Tofu ...
(Incidentally, I was pretty confused when I first came to Shanghai.  I had heard repeatedly from the Shanghainese that Shanghainese cuisine is on the sweet side.  They, apparently, like the Thais, added sugar to everything.  But whenever we went to so-called Shanghainese restaurants, they were inevitably super spicy - more like Szechuan cuisine, with all the mouth-numbing chili oil.  I later learnt that the Shanghainese were learning to love spicy food, and with the proximity of the Szechuan province, Shanghainese cuisine started to show this influence.)

Crispy roast chicken ...
