Nikko Toshogu Shrine & Sacred Bridge

Nikko Toshogu Shrine is a World Heritage Site. It was built to commemorate the Shogun, who were said to be even more powerful than the Japanese Emperor in their time.

The path to the Toshogu Shrine was paved with majestic towering trees ...

A famous wood carving in the shrine ... See no evil, hear no evil and speak no evil ...

The Shogun ...

Another famous carving ... the Sleeping Cat ... is renown for being so life-like...

It seems that the Japanese pray for their fortunes at this shrine ...

Someone commented that the fortunes don't seem too bad ...

But if they do get a "bad" fortune, they tie it up here to return it to the shrine in hopes that they won't come true ...

The Sacred Bridge ...
